The 2017 State Championship Meets came to a fast and furious conclusion at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover after two unseasonably warm days of competition. Five teams successfully defended their 2016 state titles with Charles H. Flowers (4A Girls), Northwest (4A Boys), Oxon Hill (3A Boys), Hereford (2A Girls), and Boonsboro (1A Girls). In addition, the Franklin Girls won their 2nd title in 3A, the Century Boys won their third title in 2A, and the Boonsboro Boys hoisted the 1A State Champ trophy for the first time ever! Four new classification records and one new state record were set in the Class 1A and 2A meet on Monday, while in Tuesday's Class 4A and 3A meets three new classification records were set. It is also noteworthy that the Northwest Boys team became the third team in our indoor track history to win four consecutive state titles. Fairmont Heights accomplished this first on their way to seven consecutive state crowns from 1974 - 1980 followed by Oakland Mills in 1999 - 2002. Don't forget that you can relive all of the action on-demand or purchase DVD's of both meet days with the NFHS Network!
There are many people that we need to thank for their sincere hard work, time, and effort throughout the season but especially during the region and State meets. First and foremost, the State Indoor Track Committee, led by Director Joe Sargent, and each of the Region Meet Directors for organizing and making the meets run smoothly. Secondly, we'd like to thank the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex and their most helpful staff in permitting us to host region and state meets at their fine facility. We deeply appreciate all of the cooperation we receive and cannot wait for next year!
