Runners braved the cold and wind at Saturday's State Cross Country meets at Hereford as four teams successfully defended last year's titles and three male runners achieved noteworthy performances. River Hill's Anish Nanjappa set a new Class 2A record with his top ten of all time clocking of 15:58.08. Earlier in the day, Class 4A Northwood's Obsaa Feda and Eldad Mulugeta dueled to the finish as they both posted top ten all time runs of 15:44.05 and 15:44.29 respectively, that were just off of the classification and course records. Class 4A Severna Park and Class 1A Boonsboro swept the boys and girls team titles in their respective classifications as the Severna Park Boys and Boonsboro Girls successfully defended last year's state crowns. Both the Hereford Girls and Liberty Boys also retained their state titles in Class 2A each doing so for the fourth consecutive time. Rounding out the team titles was Class 3A with the Northern-Calvert Girls winning their third overall and third consecutive state crown and the Centennial Boys bringing home their first state title in 25 years and fourth overall. In addition, the following teams were recognized by their peers and selected as the Sportsmanship Award recipient in their classification: Urbana (4A), North Hagerstown (3A), Poolesville (2A), and Cambridge/South Dorchester (1A). Well done!
Once again, the MPSSAA would like to thank Hereford High School, Athletic Director Mike Kalisz and his staff for hosting the State Meets as only they can do. Our sincere thanks to the the State Cross Country Committee lead by Director Michael Sye for their commitment, time, and effort in not only managing the region meets but for helping to make this one of the best championships ever. We appreciate the team effort that it takes to make an event of this magnitude run so smoothly and look forward to seeing everyone out on the hills again next year!!
