Champs Prevail In Pitchers' Duels

The 2012 State Baseball Tournament featured white-knuckled, tight pitching duels resulting in one or two run score differentials in all four championship games.  Two schools hoisted the championship trophy for the first time in school history while two schools won for a second and third time.  Select the links above to view the complete brackets and results for each classification.   (Updated 12:00 pm, 5/29/12)

Six of the eight State Finalists headed to Aberdeen's Ripken Stadium to challenge for the right to be called State Champions in the season finale on Saturday, 5/26.  The Class 4A Championship game was the lone game on Friday, 5/25 at Shipley Field as Northwest went twelve innings in defeating Arundel, 7-6 for their first ever state baseball title.  The other six State Finalists headed to Aberdeen's Ripken Stadium to challenge for the right to be called State Champions in the season finale on 5/26.  On Saturday, the Class 2A crown went to Williamsport who was a 2-1 winner over Patuxent in 9 innings.  This was Williamsport's second state title, but first in 37 years.  Patuxent did not go home empty handed as they received the 2nd annual Paul Fahrner Baseball Tournament Sportsmanship Award.  Class 1A followed with Mountain Ridge nipping St. Michael's 2-1 for their first state baseball title. The Class 3A game wrapped up the spring season when J.M. Bennett prevailed over North Harford, 4-2 for their second consecutive title and third overall.

The MPSSAA owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the State Baseball Committee and Director Jason Woodward for their time, effort, and muscle in not only getting the rain-soaked State Semifinals done on time at 4 different sites, but for managing the region tournaments, and running the State Finals.  Our appreciation is also extended to the people at McCurdy Field, Joe Cannon Stadium, and Shipley Field for making it possible to play the state semifinals and/or finals at their sites.  It is truly a pleasure to work with such professionals, especially when the weather is uncooperative.  Thanks also to the staff and management at Ripken Stadium for their work in providing a memorable state championship experience for our student-athletes.  We cannot wait to see what next year has in store for us!
