The MPSSAA Classification Committee met on Tuesday, 11/1 and voted to put forth recommended region and section alignments for the 2017-19 academic years. The recommendations will be presented to the MPSSAA Board of Control at their December 7th meeting for final approval. Incorporated into the process this year were new guidelines (see link above) that were approved at the April 29, 2016 Board of Control meeting. The initial classification calculation included member schools that fielded greater than 50 percent (12 or more) of the total number of sports administered by the MPSSAA (23) during the previous two-year classification cycle. Schools that fielded less than 50 percent (11 or less) of the total number of sports administered by the MPSSAA will be assigned to the appropriate classification for the sports that they offer, using the established enrollment ranges from the initial classification calculation. Boys and girls teams from the same school and for the same sports will also be assigned to the same classification/region/section whenever possible.
The Classification Committee is comprised of a representative from each of the nine districts and a school principal representative. For the purpose of competition parity in events coordinated by the MPSSAA, member schools are divided as equally as possible into four classifications based on enrollment. Enrollment numbers are submitted to the MPSSAA Executive Director by November 1st by each local school system Superintendent and include the actual enrollment of grades 9, 10, 11 in each of the MPSSAA member schools as of September 30th.
