The 2019 State Swimming and Diving Championships have come to another rousing conclusion as all four of last year's team champions completed successful title defenses in repeating as state champs once again this year. In addition, Sherwood and Patterson Mill distinguished themselves to their peers at the meets as they both took home the Doug Sutherland Sportsmanship Award! Diving started the weekend off on Friday night as Linganore's Jessica Buntman edged out Clarksburg's Cassie Graham for the Girls gold medal, 413.10 points to 402.50 points. The Boys gold medal went to Sherwood's Max Weinrich who outdistanced Blake's Ethan Badrian, 490.15 points to 437.25 points. Swimming took place on Saturday where the Girls Class 4A/3A title went to Sherwood, their third, while the Winston Churchill Boys took home a second 4A/3A Championship trophy to repeat last year's performances. In Class 3A/2A/1A, the Poolesville Boys and Girls teams maintained their stronghold on the state titles with their eighth consecutive and fifth consectutive state crowns respectively.
The MPSSAA extends congratulations to all of the schools, coaches, student-athletes, and officials that participated in this year's State Meets. We would like to acknowledge our Region Meet host sites and region meet directors for their extra effort and cooperation in completing nine meets in such efficient fashion. Our sincerest gratitude to the State Swimming and Diving Committee, especially Committee Director Kevin Kendro, Swim Meet Director Chris Bley, Diving Meet director Todd Garner, and Meet Entry Coordinator Michael Kokoski for a truly outstanding job of preparation and planning leading up to this culminating event. Once again, we cannot thank the University of Maryland College Park Campus Recreation Services and their top-notch staff enough for their hospitality, cooperation, and support in working with us to provide first class facilities for our State Swimming and Diving Championships.
