In Class 1A both 2012 champs successfully defended those titles as the Perryville Boys won their second state title by a 5.5 point margin over the Boonsboro Boys and the Boonsboro Girls eeked out a 1 point victory over the Western STES Girls. The Class 2A titles went to first-timers Century Boys and Oakdale Girls. Century outdistanced 2nd place Long Reach, 111 points to 62 points while Oakdale's Girls only had a 12-point cushion over runner-up Middletown. Two of the closest finishes occurred in Class 3A as the Mount Hebron Boys' posted their first state crown by downing Hereford, 58 points to 55 points and the Thomas Stone Girls' nipped the Howard Girls', 55 to 54 for their first state title. One more first time state championship team was crowned in Class 4A as the Northwest Boys' prevailed over county nemesis Clarksburg, 68 to 51.5. On the girls' side, Bowie successfully defended their Class 4A Girls' title by outscoring second place Wootton, 92-64.
It goes without saying that an event of this magnitude requires the assistance of numerous volunteers and officials to all of whom we are very grateful. We are equally appreciative of the contributions made by the members of the Boys' & Girls' State Track and Field Committee, led by Beth Shook, to the region as well as the state meets. Thanks and appreciation to Morgan State University, especially Larry Frazier, for the use of their exceptional facility and the superb assistance and cooperation that we always receive. We continue to be impressed by the talents of our student-athletes and look forward to seeing what next year will bring!
