In Monday's action, the Pikesville girls hoisted the Class 1A state champion trophy for the first time in school history as they edged Manchester Valley, 70-64. Meanwhile, in Class 1A boys', Smithsburg hauled in their second state title by outscoring defending champ Pikesville, 79.5-75. The Class 2A titles were nip and tuck as the Western STES girls returned to the champions podium for the third time in the past five years by squeaking past Largo, 64-61. The Class 2A boys' title went to Douglass-PG, their second, as they unseated defending champ Century, 65-60.
On Tuesday, the closest result of the day was in the 3A Girls as Huntingtown edged Milford Mill 67.5-67 for their first state title. On the boys' side in Class 3A, Long Reach improved on last year's runner-up finish by topping local rival Centennial 42-36 in winning their first state crown. Class 4A was also hard fought as the Northwest boys improved on last year's runner-up finish to edge Paint Branch 48-46 for their initial state championship. South River completed the day of "firsts" by winning their inaugural girls' Class 4A crown over Clarksburg, 43.5-34.5. Don't forget to re-live all of the excitement on-demand and order DVD's at MPSSAA Network several days after the conclusion of the event.
The MPSSAA is deeply appreciative of the patience shown by our schools and their communities and the cooperation that we received in order to complete ALL of the postseason meets for indoor track. We must also recognize the tireless efforts and flexibility of the State Indoor Track Committee as their contributions were key to not only rescheduling meets but running them as well. Last but not least, we would also like to thank our friends at the 5th Regiment Armory, Hagerstown Community College, and especially the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex for their invaluable cooperation and flexibility with holding meets and securing make up dates at their facilities.
