On Saturday, March 14th prior to the 8 PM Boys' 4A State Basketball Championship game, both Meade HS and Bethesda-Chevy Chase HS had packed the stands at the University of Maryland-College Park's Xfinity Center. After the team introductions, Mr. Peyton Easton took the microphone to sing the national anthem.
After starting to sing, Mr. Easton was taken ill and collapsed onto the court. Fortunately, Mr. Easton received immediate medical attention. As paramedics wheeled him off of the court, the large crowd stood and gave a thunderous ovation which was truly a magnificent tribute! Even more remarkable was the spontaneous singing of the National Anthem which followed. The Meade High School student cheering section initiated the singing which quickly spread throughout the entire arena. It was truly a moment that filled everyone with a deep sense of pride in the compassion, dignity, and sportsmanship displayed by those in attendance. They finished what Peyton started. We are happy to report that Mr. Easton is expected to fully recover. Click on the following link to view the video that has been posted on YouTube:
