State Champs Are Cream Of the Crop

A weekend of tense, nail-biting matches and unbelievable reversals of fortune punctuated the 2012 State Wrestling Tournament at the University of Maryland's Cole Field House.  Winters Mill hoisted the Class 2A/1A Team Champ trophy for the second consecutive year with their 115 point total while River Hill won their first ever State Team title in Class 4A/3A with a total of 91 points.  Select the links above to view the complete team and individual results.      Perry Hall posted their school's best finish since 1986 with 82 points as they received the Class 4A/3A State Finalist team trophy.  Likewise, in Class 2A/1A, Parkside had their highest finish ever and best since 1986 with their strong showing as they took second place with 92 points.

Six wrestlers won titles for the second consecutive year, but the highlight was Centennial's Nathan Kraisser winning the 4A/3A crown at 126 lbs. to become only the fifth four-time state champion in tournament history.  Two-time winners in Class 4A/3A included Tyler Goodwin of Arundel (132 lbs.), Hunter Sutton of Churchill (138 lbs.), Chesapeake-AA's Alex Rice (145 lbs.), and La Plata's Josh Llopez (152 lbs.).  Jason Wright of Mountain Ridge (195 lbs.) and Fallston's Zach Cullison (132 lbs.) won state titles for a second year in a row state in the Class 2A/1A side of the tournament.

Make sure to watch the Championship Final bouts all over again on or about Monday, 3/5. DVD's will also be available for purchase that same date, thanks to the professional talents of College ScoutClick here to view final bouts or purchase DVD's.

The MPSSAA extends a hearty "thank you" to not only the State Wrestling Committee, but to the huge cadre of workers and volunteers that pulled together and seamlessly managed an event of this magnitude.  We would also like to thank the University of Maryland's Campus Recreation Services for their cooperation and support in providing such a great venue.  Congratulations to each wrestler, coach, referee, and spectator for your participation and support.  We look forward to seeing everyone again next year at Cole Field House!
