State Champs Keep Cool Under Pressure

Four State Champions have been crowned after a blustery and chilly Memorial Day weekend and a record set last year was broken once again.  The Northern Patriots of Calvert County continued their streak as they won their 6th straight state title and 10th overall.  Don't forget that you can relive every exciting play with unlimited free viewing and DVD purchases of all four final games on the MPSSAA Network.  Click on the links above for the brackets and complete results for each classification.  (updated 5/26/13, 7:35 am)

In Friday's first game, returning champ Mountain Ridge edged Colonel Richardson in 8 innings, 9-8 for the Class 1A title, their second in a row.  The Class 2A championship followed as Easton won their seventh state title by virtue of their 10-0 win over Catoctin in 5 innings.  Saturday's play began with Northern-Calvert grinding out a 3-0 win over Eastern Technical in the Class 3A title match-up.  In the final game of the tournament, Sherwood retained their Class 4A title by shutting out Glen Burnie, 5-0 and the Eugene Robertson Sportsmanship Award was presented to River Hill HS.

The MPSSAA  would like to tip our caps to the State Softball Committee led by Lynn Pitonzo  for their effort and assistance throughout the season especially with the region and state tournaments. Likewise, our appreciation goes out to the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks for making the Bachman Park Complex available to us for our state semifinals.  A special thank you to the folks at the University of Maryland Athletic Department for their cooperation and assistance in making the Robert E. Taylor Softball facility available to us for hosting our State Finals. It is the best softball venue in the state, bar none and we are grateful for its usage.

We also need to thank all of the coaches, officials and spectators for the support you give to our tournament.  In addition, we would like to extend our congratulations to each and every participant.  Keep honing those skills and remember that only perfect practice makes perfect!
