State Champs Meet The Challenge

Student-athletes, coaches, and spectators gathered on the hills of McDaniel College on Saturday 11/9 and cheered one another on for eight races throughout the day.  When all was said and done, Severna Park's Ryan Forsyth (15:41.3) and Centennial's Shreya Nalubola (18:14.1) covered the course in the fastest boys' and girls' times respectively. Select the links above for the complete results of every race.  (updated 11/10/13, 10:05 AM)

On the boys' side of the ledger, Ryan Forsyth led Severna Park to a successful defense of their 2012 team title with his win in the Class 4A race.  The team from Thomas Johnson won their first state crown as Ben Freed led the way for his teammates by winning the Class 3A race with a time of 16:06.9.  Poolesville's Chase Weaverling won the Class 2A race in 16:12.9, but Catoctin prevailed in winning the 2A team title for the second year in a row, and their third overall, with 61 points to Poolesville's 111.  Bohemia Manor's Ty Franks defended his Class 1A crown by winning that race in 16:20.8 while the team from Perryville struck first time gold in winning the team 1A trophy over Southern-Garrett, 55-67.

Kicking off the girls' competition in Class 4A was Dulaney's Isabel Griffith posting a win with a time of 18:26.2 while Walter Johnson edged Bethesda-CC for the team title, 60-64.  This was WJ's 4th title overall but 1st since 1999.  In Class 3A, the Centennial team rode the coattails of Shreya Nalubola to the team title over River Hill, 56-67 for their 2nd ever title but first in 23 years.  Hereford prevailed in the Class 2A race in winning their 8th title, but Meggan Grams of Boonsboro was the individual 2A race victor in a time of 18:54.6.  The Class 1A competition was the day's closest as Cambridge/South Dorchester hoisted the champions trophy for the first time by virtue of their 2 point win over Smithsburg, 80-82.  Katie Leisher of Manchester Valley was the individual Class 1A champ with a time of 19:30.9.  Don't forget that you can relive the excitement of the championship races with unlimited free viewing and DVD purchases available within days of the original event on the MPSSAA Network!

We are extremely appreciative of McDaniel College, especially the Athletic Department, for their superior assistance, support, and hospitality in hosting our event on their campus.  Many thanks to all of the region meet directors and the State Cross Country Committee, led by Michael Sye, for their planning, organization, and implementation of the post-season blueprint for a successful event.  Don't stop running and we will see you again next year!
