State Dual Wrestling Titles Worth The Wait

     Both of last year's State runner's-up took the big prize at this year's State Dual Wrestling Championships on Saturday, February 11th at North Point HS in Charles County.  Winters Mill HS in Class 2A/1A and Urbana HS in Class 4A/3A each won their first ever State Dual Meet title after finishing second in the 2011 tourney.  (updated 2/11/12, 10:45 pm)

     The Class 2A/1A teams kicked things off at 12 noon when #1 Winters Mill handled #4 Wicomico, 40-33 and #2 Owings Mills ground out a 33-31 win over #3 Glenelg.  Class 4A/3A took the stage at 2 PM with #1 River Hill having their hands full with #4 North Hagerstown before prevailing, 38-31 and #2 Urbana edging home-standing #3 North Point by a score of 27-24.  In the 5:00 Finals, #1 Winters Mill topped #2 Owings Mills, 66-4 while #2 Urbana upset #1 River Hill by a score of 36-28.

     The MPSSAA extends its sincerest appreciation to the North Point HS community and especially Athletic Director A.K. Johnson and his staff for their time, effort, and hospitality in hosting this event at their beautiful and spaceous facility.  We also want to thank Tournament Director Dave Dodson and each of the 8 region tournament directors for their time and organization of the region and state meets. Each of you can take pride in another job well done.  Congratulations to all of the participants and best of luck for the remainder of the season!

Class 2A/1A -- 12:00 PM
     #1 Winters Mill (14-0, 8.00) defeated #4 Wicomico (11-3, 6.29), 40-33.

     #2 Owings Mills (14-0, 8.00) defeated #3 Glenelg (13-1, 7.42), 33-31.

Class 4A/3A -- 2:00 PM
     #1 River Hill (14-0, 8.00) defeated #4 North Hagerstown (12-2, 6.85), 38-31.

     #2 Urbana (14-0, 8.00) defeated #3 North Point (13-1, 7.42), 27-24.

Finals -- 5 PM
     Class 2A/1A:  #1 Winters Mill defeated #3 Owings Mills, 66-4.
     Class 4A/3A: #2 Urbana defeated #1 River Hill, 36-28.
