After two days of competition, Kent Island and South Carroll ended up tied for the Class 2A/1A crown, the first ever for each, with identical point totals of 94 points.  This is only the fourth time a tie for first has occurred with the last time being back in 1986.  The Class 4A/3A title was also a first ever for North Hagerstown as they bested River Hill, 96.5 points to 92.5 points.  Noteworthy individual performances were turned in by seven student-athletes, six who became two-time state champions and one who became a three-time champion this weekend.  In Class 4A/3A, LaPlata's Marty Margolis (126 lbs.) and River Hill's Cory Daniel (220 lbs.) stood on the top podium for the second time in their careers while Churchill's Hunter Sutton (152 lbs.) became a three-time champ to cap off his career.  Austin Shaffer of Southern-Garrett (113 lbs.), Charlie Perella of Catoctin (145 lbs.), Adam Martz of Mountain Ridge (152 lbs.), and Matt Olauson of Queen Anne's (195 lbs.) were the tops of Class 2A/1A as they each posted their second career state title.  Don't forget that you can relive all of the action on-demand and purchase DVD's at MPSSAA Network within days of the event.

The MPSSAA extends a hearty "thank you" to not only the State Wrestling Committee, lead by Dr. William Beattie, but to the huge cadre of workers and volunteers that pulled together and seamlessly managed an event of this magnitude.  We would also like to thank the University of Maryland's Campus Recreation Services, especially Kurt Klier and his staff, for their cooperation and support in providing such a great venue.  Congratulations to each wrestler, coach, and spectator for your participation and support.  We look forward to seeing everyone again next year at Cole Field House!
