The 2023 Swimming and Diving State Championships delivered a three-time diving champion, familiar foes in girls swimming, and quite the turnaround in the boys swimming division.
DIVING
- After a scoreboard technical malfunction paused the girls diving competition, senior Lilia Atanda of Sherwood dove her way to her third straight diving championship. One thing to note: After she won her first title as a freshman in 2020, the 2021 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, preventing Lilia from attempting to pocket a title each year in high school.
- Aidan Wang was able to grab the boys diving championship after finishing as the runner-up last year.
GIRLS SWIMMING
- The Walter Johnson girls swim team defended their 2022 title against Bethesda-Chevy Chase. Besides the current year, these two teams also battled for the championship in the 2020 and 2022 seasons.
BOYS SWIMMNG
- It was a vice-versa effect in boys swimming. Walt Whitman (4A/3A) and Rockville (3A/2A/1A) both captured their championships by defeating Winston Churchill and Poolesville, respectively. Both teams had finished as the runner-up in last year's championships to...you guessed it...Winston Churchill and Poolesville.
