A great weekend of softball came to a close last night at the University of Maryland College Park Softball Stadium as one new champion was crowned and three champs successfully defended last year's titles. Class 2A Middletown hoisted the championship trophy for the first time while Manchester Valley (1A), Northern-Calvert (3A), and Sherwood (4A) all repeated as state champs. Leonardtown HS took home the Eugene Robertson Sportsmanship Award in their first tournament appearance in 25 years. Way to go, ladies!! Our sincere gratitude goes to each of our 16 region tournament directors and the State Softball Committee led by Lynn Pitonzo. Thanks also to the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks for allowing us to hold our State Semifinals at Bachman Park and for doing such a fabulous job prepping the fields after all the rain. We are also indebted to the University of Maryland-College Park and their Athletic Department for their assistance and cooperation in hosting the State Finals at Maryland Softball Stadium. It was a privilege to hold our Championship Finals at the best softball facility in the state! We wish everyone an enjoyable and relaxing summer break and we will look forward to another successful tournament next year!
