The air may have been chilly but the play sizzled as the 2018 State Golf Championships came to a close at the venerable University of Maryland - College Park Golf Course this afternoon with some playoff action deciding the two boys titles. On the team side, Marriotts Ridge continued their stranglehold on the Class 2A/1A title with their 7th consecutive state crown by virtue of their 27 stroke win (628-655) over runner-up River Hill. In Class 4A/3A, Urbana won their 4th state golf title over second place Northern-Calvert by 18 strokes (619-637). When the dust settled on the girls competition, both of last year's champs successfully defended their titles. North Point's Bailey Davis won the Class 4A/3A title over Churchill's Kaylin Yeoh, 147-149 while Faith McIlvain of Marriotts Ridge topped Oakdale's Elizabeth Tucci, 153-166. The boys competition needed to go to a playoff in both classifications as all four golfers shot identical scores of 148. Prevailing in a three hole playoff was River Hill's Kevin Hickey over Fallston's William Creery for the Class 2A/1A crown while Edward Coffren of Northern-Calvert took the gold medal in Class 4A/3A over Westminster's Aaron Sorkin in a two hole playoff.
The MPSSAA wishes to thank this year's State Golf Committee, especially Committee Director Eric Michael and State Site Director Phelps Prescott for their time and effort throughout the season, but especially during the District and State Tournaments. You are each invaluable in your service to our student-athletes. Another BIG thank you goes to the golf course management and employees at the University of Maryland - College Park for providing us with a top flight facility that we are proud to play our championships on. We cannot say enough about how much we appreciate the cooperation and assistance that we continually receive. Thank YOU!!!
