The 2023 MPSSAA Boys and Girls Basketball State Championships were held at the Xfinity Center on the campus of the University of Maryland - College Park on March 9 - 11. After the last buzzer sounded, the running tally was three on how many schools were welcomed in the state basketball champion club. Parkville boys, Glen Burnie girls, and Henry E. Lackey girls all won their first championships. In addition, of the eight games, three featured teams who were trying to win consecutive championships: Lake Clifton 1A boys (attempting its fourth), Pikeville 1A girls (attempting its third), and Baltimore Polytechnic Institute 3A girls (back-to-back). Only the Pikesville girls were able to succeed in their attempt, thus improving their record to 3-0 in championship games under Coach Michael Dukes.
One of the highlights of the tournament though was the tremendous display of sportsmanship by Lake Clifton boys head coach Herman Tree Harried. After his Lakers fought hard in a single digit loss against Edmondson/Westside, Coach Harried requested to award the state championship trophy to Coach Darnell Dantzler of Edmondson/Westside. Just last season Coach Dantzler's Red Storm fell to the Lakers in the final game.
Congratulations to all boys and girls 2023 State Basketball Champions!
