The 2023 MPSSAA Golf State Championships were held at the University of Maryland Golf Course on October 23 - 25. Although the morning temperatures were on the colder side, the sun visited daily, allowing golfers to eventually shed their layers.
This year's team championships saw the same four teams atop the scoreboard. River Hill defeated Marriotts Ridge for the second straight year to remain the Class 4A/3A champion. Class 2A/1A champion South Carroll took home their first ever golf title, swapping their 2022 second place finish with defending champion Poolesville.
On the individual side, we were one playoff hole short of crowning the same four golfers for the third straight year. Helen Yeung of River Hill (4A/3A) and Olivia Cong of Poolesville (2A/1A) held onto their first place trophies with six and five stroke victories, respectively. Noah Wallace of North East-C, managed a one-stroke victory over Adam Green of Hereford to remain the 2A/1A champion. It was new 4A/3A champ, Owen Newberry of Crofton, who needed to come from two strokes down, to tie defending champ, Benjamin Siriboury of River Hill, and force a playoff. He needed to do it by shooting a 69 in Round 2, the only male to shoot under 70 during either round. It took one playoff hole for Newberry to take the title.
