2023 MPSSAA Soccer State Championships Recap

The 2023 State Soccer Championships took place at the Ridley Sports Complex at Loyola University on November 16 - 18.

There would be no returning boys soccer finalists from the 2022 championships, as eight new teams took the field each day.

  • Boys Class 1A - Allegany and Harford Technical had never won a soccer championship in boys or girls soccer, so whoever hoisted the trophy at the end did it for the first time ever.  It was the Cobras who came out victorious against the Campers with Harford Tech beating Allegany 2-0.
  • Boys Class 2A - This was the first final ever for Damascus as they faced a Century team seeking a third title.  The Hornets were able to claim their first championship, beating the Knights 3-1.

  • Boys Class 3A - Both South River and Towson have been absent from the finals for many, many years.  Although Towson was seeking their sixth championship, their last was in 2005 which was also the last time they appeared in a final.  South River has only played in one other final where they won their only championship...in 1987.  It was not close on the scoreboard as South River took it to Towson beating them 5-1.

  • Boys Class 4A - We came across another team, Leonardtown, who had never won a title.  They faced Northwestern, who was seeking their fourth, with their most recent one in 2021.  Carrying a 2-0 lead into the second half and eventually a 2-1 lead with only a few minutes left, Leonardtown was given a red card with less than 3 minutes remaining.  Northwestern took advantage and evened the score to end regulation.  After two scoreless sudden death overtimes, Leonardtown won it in the first set of penalty kicks 4-2.

On the girls side, Walt Whitman and Mount Hebron were the only teams returning to the championship sidelines from a year ago.

  • Girls Class 1A - Both Perryville and Havre de Grace had never won a championship in boys or girls soccer.  This was the first final the girls team had appeared in and Perryville had not made it to the final since 2006.  In the end, it was Havre de Grace who was able to hold on for a 1-0 win.

  • Girls Class 2A - The Sparrows Point Pointers dominated their class in girls soccer in the 2010s, winning the title six times consecutively from 2013-2018.  They had not competed in a final since that last one.  In comparison, the Hereford Bulls had appeared in five championship games, winning the only one in 2000.  The Pointers once again claimed the championship defeating the Bulls 1-0.

  • Girls Class 3A - Severna Park was seeking their first championship in 20 years.  2003 was the last time they tasted victory in the last game of the season.  They had to face a tough Mount Hebron team, who was in their third straight final, and was 1-1 in the first two.  Severna Park won 2-0 and added a seventh state championship to their resume.

  • Girls Class 4A - Walt Whitman was also appearing in their third straight final, but they were also looking to become a three-peater.  The Montgomery Blair Blazers had never made it to the final game and was hoping they could go one-for-one.  The Vikings prevailed 2-0 and have gone an impressive 6-2 in championship games.
