This year’s version of the softball state championships made you hold your breath more than a few times. Hosted at the University of Maryland Softball Complex, the games were close and extremely competitive. Two were decided by scoring just a single run with a third decided by two. If you missed these championships, read on for details.

EUGENE G. ROBERTSON Sportsmanship Award: DULANEY LIONS
- North Dorchester won their first state championship in their first state tournament appearance. The game was a nail biter against Catoctin in a pitchers duel that left runners on base for both teams. The dagger did not come until the bottom of the sixth when the Eagles managed to get their two hits and score the lone run.
- Rising Sun won their seventh state championship by defeating Calvert, who was the only school in the final games defending their 2022 state title. Just as Calvert had done in last year’s final to beat Rising Sun, the Tigers needed only that extra inning to drive in a winning run against the Cavaliers.
- Damascus was able to do what 21 other teams could not do this season: defeat Reservoir. If it had gone Reservoir’s way, the Gators would have won their first ever state championship thus completing an undefeated season.
- Dulaney was the final team hoping to snag their first state championship trophy, but was stopped short by an Urbana team who seemed to hit anything coming their way. Urbana finished the game with 15 hits and their second title. Their first was won back in 2011.
