Hard Work Pays Off With State Crown

       The State Soccer Finals have come to an exciting close as the majority of games remained in doubt until the final seconds agonizingly ticked off of the clock.  A few teams took home their first ever state soccer titles while others took home the champions trophy for the first time in years.  Click on the link above to view  the complete results for each classification.  (updated 11/16/13, 5:15 PM)

     The Boys' 1A title game kicked things off on Thursday, 11/14 as North Carroll nipped Pikesville, 1-0 for their first state title.  The Girls' 3A final followed with River Hill successfully defending their title for their ninth overall against a tough Huntingtown team, 1-0.  Play resumed on Friday, 11/15 with the Girls' 2A championship game as Century overcame Loch Raven, 3-0 for their third state crown and Sparrows Point came back to top Smithsburg, 2-1 in Class 1A for their first state title.  Friday's schedule concluded with the Boys' 4A title game when Severna Park edged a talented Blake team 1-0 for their third state title and first since 2001. The three remaining games on Saturday began with the Girls' 4A final as Whitman took home their second state title and first since 2004 by virtue of their 2-0 win over Catonsville.  Saturday play continued as Urbana downed Northern-Calvert, 4-1 for their first ever state soccer crown in the Class 3A game.  Tournament play concluded with Class 2A title game as Hereford won their first title since1989 and 4th overall over Fallston, 1-0 and the tournament sportsmanship awards were won by the Urbana boys and the Century girls.  Don't forget to relive every exciting moment with unlimited free viewing and DVD purchases within days of the original contest on the MPSSAA Network.

     The MPSSAA appreciates the valuable efforts of the Boys' and Girls' State Soccer Committees, led respectively by Bob Sheffler and Marianne Shultz, in putting this tournament  together from the first round of the region tournaments to the Finals.  A special thank you to the  staff at UMBC for the use of Retriever Stadium over the three days of the tournament. We could not have a successful event without their cooperation and assistance.  Congratulations also to all of the officials, coaches, and teams that participated in this year's tournament for the exciting play put on display for all of the spectators to appreciate and enjoy.  Next year's tournament promises to be even better and we hope to see everyone there again!
