Hard Work Yields Big Results

The State Finals yielded three first timers and one five-time titlelist after the scoreboard lights dimmed on another rompin', stompin' championship weekend. Select the links above for complete brackets, game results, and statistics for all tournament games. (updated 3/12/11, 9:50 p.m.)

All four final games have been videotaped and will be streamed over the internet on a delayed basis with the help of our friends at Scholastic Sports Net. Select this link to view video of the finals or to purchase DVD's.

State Championship play began with the Class 2A title going to Calvert, their first ever, by virtue of their win over Middletown, 46-37. Class 4A followed suit when Gaithersburg upended Dr. Henry Wise, 58-38 for the first state title in their school's history.  Dunbar won their fifth state championship winning the Class 1A title game over Northern-Garrett, 80-62.  Class 3A wrapped things up with a barn-burner of a game and another first time state champion as Frederick edged Aberdeen, 76-71 . The Mildred H. Murray Sportsmanship Award was also presented at the conclusion of the tournament to Gaithersburg HS for displaying the best overall sportsmanship while participating in the tournament.

Thanks go out to all 16 region tournament directors for their efforts in directing the region tournament series leading up to the state tournament.  It is a thankless job that is key to the overall tournament success. The MPSSAA also greatly appreciates the time and effort of the state tournament committee, many of whom worked the entire 3 days of the championship weekend. In addition to the state committee, a whole host of willing and dedicated workers helped make the weekend run like a well oiled machine in providing a lasting lifetime memory for all of the participants.  Last, but not least, we are indebted to UMBC's Athletic Department and staff for permitting us to utilize RAC Arena and the UMBC campus for this event. Their cooperation and flexibility are second to none and we appreciate the great working relationship that we maintain with them. Enjoy the offseason and see everyone back on the hardwood next fall!
