Sport Specific Classification Recommendations Put Forth For 2025-2027

The MPSSAA Classification Committee met in early November and voted to put forth recommended sport specific region and section alignments for the 2025-2027 academic years. The recommendations will be presented to the MPSSAA Board of Control at the December 11th meeting for final approval. Select the desired link inside to view additional meeting information, sport specific school enrollment numbers as submitted by local school systems, and the region and section alignment proposals.

MPSSAA Announces Scott Witkin as State Swimming Rules Interpreter and Steve Bettinger as State Diving Rules Interpreter

The MPSSAA is proud to announce the appointments of Scott Witkin and Steve Bettinger to the position of State Swimming and Diving Rules Interpreter effective August 2, 2022. Mr. Witkin will assume the responsibilities as the MPSSAA swimming rules interpreter and Mr. Bettinger will assume the MPSSAA diving rules interpreter responsibilities.

The Maryland State Board of Education approved at their July 26, 2022, meeting proposed amendments by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) to the COMAR 13A.06.03 interscholastic athletic regulations. The approved regulations will take effect on August 22, 2022.

In celebration of 50 Years of Title IX, the MPSSAA Girls’ Lacrosse Committee would like to honor our state committee director, Ms. Melba Williams. As a Title IX Trailblazer, Ms. Williams organized the first girls’ lacrosse state committee in 1974, with a vision to bring girls lacrosse region and state tournaments to Maryland. In 1990, her vision became reality with the playing of the first ever MPSAAA Girls’ Lacrosse State Tournament. She has served as director of the girls lacrosse state commit

NFHS Sport Questionnaires for Coaches, Officials, and Athletic Administrators (Winter Sports)

The NFHS is distributing the annual sport-specific questionnaires for winter sports. They can be accessed directly on the NFHS website. Coaches, Athletic Directors, and Officials are asked to participate in the NFHS rules-writing process by taking the annual rules questionnaire. It is provided so the opinions of a national sampling of registered officials and coaches will be considered by the NFHS Rules Committee.

The Minds in Motion Scholarship, is awarded to female and male senior scholar-athletes who attend a MPSSAA school and participate in MPSSAA-recognized sports. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded toward post-secondary education for qualifying applicants and is presented to the winners at a luncheon. The application, with requirements, is available on the MPSSAA website during a 5-week window in March/April.

MPSSAA Executive Council Approves State Tournament Changes to Ensure Playoff Opportunities

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) on Thursday, January 27, 2022 approved a set of proposals to alleviate issues associated with COVID-19 cancellations and pauses of regular season contests to ensure equitable opportunity for all schools to compete in the 2022 MPSSAA Winter State Championships. The proposals address the sports of indoor track and wrestling that utilized regular season as qualifiers for state tournament entry.

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) on Friday, September 24, 2021 approved a proposal to alleviate issues associated with COVID-19 quarantines, loss of football contests, and to provide an equitable opportunity for all schools to compete in the 2021 Football State Championships. The proposal will allow all 182-member schools playing football to enter the 2021 state tournament.

State Board of Education Approves MPSSAA Waiver Requests for 2021-2022 Academic Year

The Maryland State Board of Education at their August 24, 2021 meeting supported the request for waiver of interscholastic athletic regulations found in COMAR 13A.06.03. These regulations, at the request of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) and local Superintendent of Schools, will give the local school systems (LSS) the flexibility to navigate county COVID-19 restrictions and administer interscholastic athletic opportunities based on local conditions.

The Board of Control overwhelmingly voted in favor of the proposal, returning Spring state championships to Maryland for the first time since May 2019.

The MPSSAA mourns the passing of former MPSSAA Executive Director, Paul Rusko. Mr. Rusko served as Executive Director of the association during the 1970-71 school year. We are extremely sad to share the news that Patricia "Pat" Barry, longtime Coordinator of Montgomery County Public School Athletics (MCPS), passed away Thursday night, 9/6. Pat was a champion for equity and a true pioneer in the field of athletic administration, serving not only MCPS but the MPSSAA in multiple capacities. Pat served as MPSSAA President from 1994-1996 and on many State Tournament Committees, including the MPSSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament.

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has just announced that the number of participants in high school sports increased for the 28th consecutive year in 2016‐17 – drawing close to the 8 million mark – according to the annual High School Athletics Participation Survey (see link inside of story). Maryland's participation numbers also experienced an increase last year to 112,414 student-athletes.

The MPSSAA is saddened by the news of the passing of Mildred H. Murray yesterday, 3/29. Mrs. Murray served 43-years in the Baltimore County Public Schools system as a teacher, coach and administrator before retiring in 1991 as the Coordinator of Physical Education and Athletics. Not only did Mildred serve the MPSSAA as the first female President in 1978, she served as the first MPSSAA State Committee Director for Volleyball, Girls Basketball, Field Hockey, Softball, and Girls Lacrosse.

All of the diving and swimming region meets are now complete as qualifying swimmers and divers head into this weekend's State Championships at the sparkling Eppley Recreation Center on the campus of the University of Maryland - College Park. Diving competitions are on Friday, 2/24 at 5 PM and the Swimming competitions will take place on Saturday, 2/25 with Class 4A/3A competing at 9:30 AM and Class 3A/2A/1A competing at 4 PM. Fan support was tremendous on the final day of the volleyball season and the players on the court did not disappoint. Matches seesawed back and forth as teams tried to gain momentum and keep it. After the final whistle, Smithsburg HS (Class 1A) and Northwest HS (Class 4A) successfully defended last year's titles. Williamsport (Class 2A) returned to the winners' circle for the 14th time while Atholton claimed the crown in Class 3A, their first state volleyball title in 37 years!

The MPSSAA Executive Council voted at last week's meeting to accept the contract proposal from Spalding as the official state volleyball beginning with the Fall, 2016 season and running through the Fall, 2020 season. The Spalding VB5 ball with red, white, and black panels will be required for region and state tournament play and highly recommended for play throughout the regular season.

Change To COMAR Regulations Regarding Swim Meet Scheduling Becomes Effective 1/7/16!!

The Maryland State Board of Education has approved the adoption of an amendment to the COMAR regulations regarding swimming that becomes effective on 1/7/16 for the current season. The amendment will permit swim teams to compete in meets on consecutive days and schedule three meets in a week one time during the regular season.

The Maryland State Board of Education has appointed Mr. Jason Bursick as the new Assistant Director of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA). The 2015 State Field Hockey Finals wrapped up Washington College on Saturday on a crisp fall day...ideal hockey weather! Class 2A kicked things off as Hereford posted their 8th state title. Bel Air followed by grabbing their first state title in 38 years and 2nd overall in Class 3A. A state leading 23rd hockey title was hauled in by Class 4A Severna Park while Class 1A Pocomoke attained their 19th crown. The 2015 State Cross Country Championships have raced to a successful close today at breezy Hereford HS as a new girls State and Class 4A record was set by Maria Coffin of Annapolis. The MPSSAA is saddened by the news of the passing of Roy Comer on 11/4. Roy served as the Supervisor of Physical Education and Athletics in the Frederick County Public Schools from 1967-1990. Not only did Roy serve this association as President and Treasurer, he was instrumental in the formation of the first state high school football tournament in Maryland and served fourteen years as our State Football Committee Director.

At the end of tournament play on Monday, 11/2 when the final strokes were all added up and one playoff completed, Winston Churchill HS set a new state record for team score with a 572, 24 strokes better than the old record which they also held! Liz is a dedicated Women's Lacrosse official with over 15 years of service at all levels of the sport which includes international as well as national officiating experience.

US Lacrosse has released the 2016 rule changes for Girls Lacrosse to go along with the previously released NFHS Baseball, Boys Lacrosse, Softball, and Track and Field rule changes. High School Sports Participation Increases Again In Latest NFHS Survey!!

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has just announced that the number of participants in high school sports increased for the 26th consecutive year in 2014‐15 – topping the 7.8 million mark for the first time – according to the annual High School Athletics Participation Survey. The Maryland State Board of Education has appointed Mr. Robert Andrew (Andy) Warner as the new Executive Director of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA). Andy becomes the sixth person to lead the MPSSAA since its inception in 1946, succeeding the 34-year tenure of the retiring Ned Sparks.

The Class 4A/3A State Swimming meet was finally held on 3/11 and when the waves in the pool subsided, the Walter Johnson boys and Winston Churchill girls came away with the team crowns. Walter Johnson's boys posted their third state title by topping Richard Montgomery 272 - 238. Winston Churchill's girls earned their first state title by scoring 288.5 points to Sherwood's 249. The 2014 State Field Hockey Finals have drawn to another successful close at Washington College. Class 3A jump started the day as Westminster prevailed over Linganore, 2-0. Class 4A followed with Severna Park downing B-CC, 4-1. Class 1A North Carroll successfully defended their title over Fallston, 2-1 and Class 2A wrapped up the day as Hereford defeated Kent Island, 2-1. Kent Island also took home the tournament Sportsmanship Award in addition to the runner-up trophy.

The MPSSAA Classification Committee met on Thursday, 11/6 and unanimously put forth recommended region and section alignments for the 2015-17 academic years. The recommendations will be presented to the MPSSAA Board of Control at their December meeting for final approval.
