    Urbana High School Student Wins MPSSAA 75th Anniversary Logo Contest

    Baltimore, Md. - In conjunction with today’s celebration of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association 75-Anniversary, the association is unveiling a 75-anniversary logo to be used for the remainder of the 2020-2021 academic year. The commemorative logo was originated by Patrick DiMisa, a senior at Urbana High School in Frederick County, as part of the MPSSAA 75-Anniversary logo contest.

  • MPSSAA Celebrates 75th Anniversary

    Baltimore, MD - The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) today celebrates the 75th anniversary of the association. Seventy-five years ago on January 26, 1946, representatives from local school systems and the Maryland State Department of Education met at the Enoch Pratt Library in downtown Baltimore to establish the framework for a state high school athletic association to replace the loosely organized "Playground Athletic League".

  • MPSSAA Mourns the Passing of Former Executive Director, Athletic Administrator Paul Rusko

    The MPSSAA mourns the passing of former MPSSAA Executive Director, Paul Rusko. Mr. Rusko served as Executive Director of the association during the 1970-71 school year. Mr. Rusko was a longtime Anne Arundel County Athletic and Physical Education Supervisors, serving until 1991. Rusko also served as the first chairman of the State Wrestling Committee.

  • MPSSAA Return for Interscholastic Athletic Guidance Update

    The MPSSAA is committed to providing local school system guidance for the return of interscholastic athletic programs. Recently the MPSSAA Executive Council approved fall and winter sport modifications and risk mitigation efforts. The MPSSAA has also provided a general section guide to making decisions on the extent of participation within local and state health department information.

    The Maryland State Board of Education approved a request for local school systems to start winter sports on December 7, 2020. The authorization comes with a request from The State Board of Education that all local school systems are, “strongly encouraged to start conditioning opportunities immediately.”

    MPSSAA Mourns the Passing of Milly Wilson

    The MPSSAA learned this morning the passing of Milly Wilson. Ms. Wilson, a former Baltimore County physical education teacher and coach, volunteered a tremendous amount of time to the MPSSAA for 47 consecutive years, promoting the increased participation of female student-athletes. The MPSSAA awarded Milly in 2016 with the National Federation of State High School Associations' State Award for Outstanding Service. Please keep Milly Wilson and her family in your thoughts.

    MPSSAA Fall and Winter Competition Seasons Postponed

    The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) in consultation with the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools, the Maryland Department of Health (MDH), and the Public School Superintendent Association of Maryland (PSSAM) has decided to postpone the 2020 high school fall and winter competition season during the first semester. The MPSSAA, the MDH, and the PSSAM are finalizing a hybrid two-semester plan focused on student engagement options in the first semester.
